Medicare and Medicaid will cover the cost of infusion associated with Dendreon Corp’s prostate cancer vaccine Provenge, the company said on Monday. The ruling by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services sent Dendreon shares up as much as 9 percent.

The Seattle-based company said that under the updated coverage policy, the costs associated with administering Provenge can now be billed separately.

Provenge costs about $93,000 for a standard course of treatment. Physicians are reimbursed $125 per infusion, on average, for biologic drugs, depending on geographic location and the length of the infusion, said Katherine Stueland, a spokeswoman for Dendreon.

The CMS decision covers claims for infusion costs of Provenge retroactive to June 30. Provenge is a new type of cancer treatment that uses cells from a patient’s own body to treat the disease.

Swiss drugmaker Novartis’s newest medicines will come under the microscope when it posts quarterly results on Tuesday as investors seek reassurance it can compensate for patent expires on its top sellers. Diovan, which sells $6 billion a year, goes off patent this year in Europe, with the United States and Japan following in 2012 and 2013.

The Basel-based group is seen posting a 7.4 percent rise in core earnings per share to $1.46, despite the strong Swiss franc, which soared to record highs against the dollar and the euro this year before the Swiss National Bank stepped in and imposed a cap on the franc against the euro.

Novartis boasts one of the strongest pipelines in the industry, and sales of recently launched multiple sclerosis pill Gilenya, cancer drug Tasigna and eye drug Lucentis will be closely watched. Also in focus will be the results of recently acquired eyecare group Alcon, a central plank of Novartis’s drive to diversify its business.

“We forecast a solid set of results boosted by the consolidation of Alcon. Pharmaceuticals will see the anticipated impact of generic erosion. Hence the focus will be on the performance of new drugs,” analysts at Helvea said. Investors are also keen to see if Novartis’s push to cut costs as well as its shift to more specialized medicines for diseases such as cancer are protecting profitability in the face of the robust franc, which has made doing business in Switzerland very costly.

The group is seen sticking to its full-year guidance of sales growth around the double-digit percentage mark in constant currencies, while growth in its pharma unit is seen in the low- to mid-single digit range. It has also forecast that its core operating margin in constant currencies should improve.

Novartis is currently trading at 10 times expected 2012 earnings. Cross-town rival Roche, which warned earlier this month that the franc was likely to take a hefty chunk out of its full-year earnings, is trading at 10.4 times.

Women who took folic acid supplements in the first two months of pregnancy were less likely to have kids with severe language delays in a new study from Norway. Folic acid is already known to reduce the risk of certain types of birth defects, and both the U.S. and Canada fortify grain products with folic acid to make sure pregnant women get enough of it. But that’s not the case in some other countries, including Norway, and doctors still worry about pregnant women getting enough of the B vitamin — especially in the developing world.

“We don’t think people should change their behavior based on these findings,” said Dr. Ezra Susser from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health in New York, who worked on the study. “But it does add weight to the public health recommendation to take folic acid early in pregnancy,” he told Reuters Health.

And, he added, it shows that “what you do during pregnancy… is not only important for birth but also for subsequent development.” The researchers gave surveys to close to 40,000 Norwegian women a few months into their pregnancies. Those included questions on what supplements women were taking in the four weeks before they got pregnant through eight weeks after conception.

Then, when their kids were three years old, Susser and his colleagues asked the same women about kids’ language skills, including how many words they could string together in a phrase. Toddlers who could only say one word at a time or who had “unintelligible utterances” were considered to have severe language delay. In total, about one in 200 kids fit into that category.

Four out of 1,000 kids born to women who took folic acid alone or combined with other vitamins had severe language delays. That compared to nine out of 1,000 kids whose moms didn’t take folic acid before and early in pregnancy. The pattern remained after Susser’s team took into account other factors that were linked to both folic acid supplementation and language skills, such as a mom’s weight and education, and whether or not she was married.

The researchers didn’t find any link between folic acid during pregnancy and kids’ motor skills, measured by how well toddlers could kick or catch a ball. The study can’t prove that folic acid, itself, prevents language delay, they wrote in the Journal of the American Medical Association. But Susser said the vitamin is known to affect the growth of neurons and could influence how proteins are made from certain genes.

“Clearly it plays a role in development that starts very early in pregnancy,” said Usha Ramakrishnan, a maternal and child nutrition researcher from Emory University in Atlanta who wasn’t involved in the new study. However, she added, it’s hard to separate out exactly when during pregnancy folic acid supplements would have an effect on later language development — since women who are taking supplements early are more likely to take them throughout pregnancy.

Susser said the results likely apply in the U.S. and other countries where grains are fortified with folic acid, also called folate, because extra supplements are still recommended during pregnancy. But he added that more research is needed to support the new study. “The recommendation worldwide is that women should be on folate supplements through all their reproductive years,” Susser said. Because of that, “we really need to know what the impact is on children, both benefits and risks.”

“I think this adds to what’s already known about the benefits of folic acid,” Ramakrishnan told Reuters Health. “It gives one more positive message of potential benefit.”

Using minimally invasive procedure is possible to solve abnormal gynecological bleeding in only 10 minutes, which solves the problem of origin without removing the uterus or womb, as before. Large number of women suffering from various conditions, such as heavy menstruation (excessive) and uterine bleeding caused by hormonal disorders, fibroids (tumors of the matrix is not cancerous) or benign polyps (small lumps that grow in the uterine cavity), usually treated by hysterectomy (removal of uterus).

However, in recent decades have diagnostic and therapeutic trends emerged that give patients equal to or better than traditional medical approaches, which adds a shorter recovery time.

No menstruation
Procedure “to remove the uterus,” regardless of clinical justification, creates some impact on the sense of physical integrity of many women. While this surgery has proved effective in the treatment of many disorders affecting women, is expensive, involves long-term disability, and therefore, slow return to daily activities.

For these reasons, more than 50 years Gynecology specialists have studied how to bypass the endometrial (lining of the uterus during menstruation is clear and leads to bleeding) as an alternative to manage patients with abnormal bleeding.

After several attempts, endometrial ablations are now possible and win adherents worldwide. The method is to treat the lining of the uterus with high or low temperatures, microwaves, radio waves, chemicals or laser to thin, scarred and incapacitated, to prevent the formation of new tissue growth on the walls of the uterus. In any form, the goal is to destroy the endometrial basal lamina, i.e., one that helps to regenerate after each period. We normally use a catheter equipped with ‘ball’ inflatable tip (because the technique works best), which is inserted through the vagina and cervix, and once there, is filled with special serum, which heats following a certain computer program.

The ball remains in contact with the uterine wall for eight minutes, enough time for heat to destroy the endometrial. The procedure is performed in an operating room using light sedation and ends in about 10 minutes. Best of all is that the patient was discharged after two hours of rest. Notably, 80% of women subjected to the technique described are not menstruation, but after one year may reapply some bleeding or spotting rare, while the remaining 20% did not rule disappears permanently.

Approved and safe
As we have seen, had long only as a treatment option to hysterectomy in cases of excessive bleeding, but not all women felt comfortable with this treatment. In addition, there are those who do not wish to receive hormones to control the problem in its infancy, so they become candidates for endometrial ablation.

It is important to clarify that it is an alternative for women who already had children I wanted and have bleeding for more than seven days, twice a month rule or have problems with your period. Therefore, if the patient wishes to become pregnant later, you will find another type of treatment, always with medical advice, throughout pregnancy because the uterine lining is necessary normal.

It is also important to note that ablation is not as expensive as a hysterectomy, as its price is equivalent to 30 or 35% of the surgery. Moreover, the destruction of endometrial tissue does not cause problems for the patient, as the invasion carried out is minimal. The scientific basis which led to the adoption of this system is a study with 125 patients that compared this technique with traditional surgery. Both treatments were equally effective at getting 80% of patients have stopped bleeding for a year.

Moreover, the technique does not guarantee that the woman will become sterile, so you can leverage the same procedure to perform a tubal ligation (tubal ligation. The hormonal function remains the same, also the sexual desire and vaginal lubrication. As we can see, there are new options for women suffering from excessive menstrual flow, which undoubtedly interferes with their daily activities, in addition to causing anemia (red blood cell count below normal, leading to poor oxygen supply).

For many, the bleeding will improve treatment alone or with hormone-based or, if they are near menopause, you may prefer to wait before undergoing the method at hand. However, when no therapy works, the patient has contraindications to hormonal medication or simply do not want to manage, it is best to opt for the ablation. Of course, before any discomfort or concern, you should consult your gynecologist.

U.S. regulators and generic drugmakers have reached a compromise agreement for a user-fee program that would require the companies to pay some $299 million in the first year to accelerate drug approvals. The Food and Drug Administration has been in negotiations with the generic drug industry since February to establish a user-fee program similar to one in place for brand-name drugs and medical devices.

Through the program, companies would pay fees to give the FDA extra money to hire more staff and improve support systems in its drug review process. Some of the fees would pay for bulking up FDA inspection of U.S. and foreign manufacturing facilities.

The FDA and several industry groups met three times in July, according to meeting notes posted on the FDA’s website, and agreed that the industry would fund the user-fee program in full starting in year one.

That would amount to $299 million a year or more, if adjusted for inflation, with some of the first-year money coming from a one-time payment by those companies whose drugs are pending review in FDA’s application backlog. More than two-thirds of all U.S. prescriptions are filled with generic drugs. They have become a formidable rival to brand-name drugs that are facing expiring patents.

With bigger revenues, the generic drug industry is becoming more willing to pay for faster approval of its products. It is also eager for the FDA to improve its inspections to avoid such scandals as the 2008 recall of blood thinning drug heparin after at least 149 people died from tainted ingredients tracked to China. Similar to the other user-fee programs, Congress would have to give its approval before generic drug user fees are enacted.

The FDA-industry agreements reached in July continue to assume that congressional budget appropriations funding the generics review would remain relatively stable.

Industry representatives in the negotiations included the Generic Pharmaceutical Association, the European Fine Chemicals Group and the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates Inc’s Bulk Pharmaceuticals Task Force. They represent such companies as Watson Pharmaceuticals, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and Mylan Labs. The FDA is holding a public meeting on the issue on August 25.
